KeyForge: Call of the Archons

Each player commands a one-of-a-kind deck led by an Archon and races to forge three keys to unlock the Crucible’s Vaults. On each turn the active player declares one of the deck’s three Houses and may play and use any number of cards from that House. Players deploy creatures to fight, play artifacts and upgrades, and use effects to gather Æmber or disrupt the opponent. There is no deckbuilding: every deck is fixed and unique, so play focuses on discovering and exploiting the specific interactions within the deck and making tactical choices between fighting and reaping to reach six Æmber and forge keys first.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Do I have to forge a key if I have enough Æmber at the start of my turn?

Yes — during Step 1, if you have enough Æmber to pay the current forging cost you must forge one key (only one key can be forged in Step 1 each turn). (page 4)

Which houses can I choose as my active house on Step 2?

You may choose any house shown on your identity card or any house for which you currently control a card; you cannot choose a house unless one of those conditions is met. (page 4)

Can I play or use cards that aren't of the active house during my turn?

No — during Step 3 you may only play, discard, or use cards that belong to the active house unless a card ability explicitly allows otherwise. (page 5)

What does "Omni" mean — can I use an Omni ability on a card that isn't the active house?

Yes — an "Omni:" ability may be triggered on any ready card you control even if that card does not belong to the active house; using it exhausts the card. (pages 6–7)

How does damage, armor, and destroyed work when creatures fight?

When creatures fight they simultaneously deal damage equal to their power, then prevention/ward/armor are applied and remaining damage is placed as tokens; if a creature has damage equal to or greater than its power it is tagged for destruction and later put into its owner's discard pile. (pages 7, 33)

If my creature and my opponent's creature both die in the same fight, do their "Destroyed:" abilities still trigger?

No — if both creatures are destroyed simultaneously they are not in play to have their "Destroyed:" abilities (that require them to be in play) resolve afterwards, so such abilities do not trigger; destroyed effects are handled at the destroyed timing described in the timing chart. (page 30; timing: page 33)
