Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Players take on the roles of iconic Marvel heroes who team up to thwart a villain's schemes in cooperative scenarios. Each player builds and customizes a hero deck from modular card pools, managing resources, hand cards, and different hero aspects to play attacks, upgrades, and events while defending against enemy attacks and plot advances. Encounters resolve through a scenario deck that drives the villain's tactics, minions, and schemes; victory requires disrupting or defeating the villain before the scheme completes. The game supports one to four players and is expanded through additional hero and scenario packs.

What a superb game. It took some time for me to get into it (7 years later xD), but it has quickly become one of my favourite boss battler cooperative card games, in the same category of greatness as Aeon's End. The thing that really stands out to me in this game is the thematic integration of its characters. Each hero has a different feel and somewhat reflects more or less successfully its theme. There's a lot of variety in the super hero designs, and the fact that you can switch which Aspect to play with them freshens up things. I don't think I will be optimising the decks anytime soon. I'm not that much into designing and building decks, but I'm sure there's a lot of already made designs when I get bored with the basic ones. Solo play is excellent. It stays well within the time I want to dedicate to a single game. 60 minutes. Unlike my other favourite card game: Imperium Legends, which just takes too damn long to finish. I also love that there's so much content. Yes, it's expensive to get it all. But you don't have to buy everything, just buy the heroes and campaigns you know and like. In the end, for the amount of enjoyment you get it's overall cheap compared to most entertainment options. Setup and teardown time is also top notch. Unlike other card games. Very simple to set up. I love that too.

Very good solo game. The game setup is simple and fast, and solo games can be finished in 40 minutes. Which makes it very appealing to play a game when you have a free time gap. As players are added the game duration increases. Deck construction is a bit limited (since you have to stick with all the hero cards)... Quite abstract, simply dealing out blows and stopping the progress of plans. It's hard to feel the theme, but I'm not a Marvel fan... Maybe someone more into the lore could enjoy this ascpect a bit more.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can an ally defend for me, and does damage to the ally carry over to my hero?

Yes — a player may exhaust an ally as the defender and all damage from that attack is dealt to the ally; if the ally is defeated, additional damage does not carry over to the identity, and if the ally leaves play before damage is dealt the identity becomes the target instead. (Rules Reference p9; Rulebook p12)

If I flip my identity (change form), do I lose my upgrades, tokens, damage, or whether my card is exhausted?

No — changing form simply flips your identity card; your ready/exhausted state, damage, attachments, tokens, and status cards remain on the character. (Rulebook p11; Rules Reference p21)

What does 'Surge' on an encounter card do?

When a card with Surge is revealed, the player resolving it deals themselves one facedown encounter card from the encounter deck (after resolving the original card and any immediate responses). (Rules Reference p42)

When does a 'When Revealed' encounter ability resolve, and can it be canceled?

A 'When Revealed' ability resolves immediately after the card is revealed (treachery cards resolve then go to the encounter discard); 'When Revealed' on villain and main scheme cards cannot be canceled. (Rulebook p17; Rules Reference p48)

Can I both thwart and attack during my turn, and are there limits on how many times I can do actions?

Yes — during your turn you may perform options like playing cards, using basic attack or basic thwart, and using allies in any order and as many times as you want so long as you can pay costs and meet restrictions; the only common limit is you may change form only once per turn. (Rulebook p10–12)

How do we win or lose the game?

The players win if they defeat the final villain stage by reducing it to zero hit points; the villain wins if the main scheme’s final stage is completed or if all players are eliminated. (Rulebook p9; Rules Reference p47–48)
