Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar – Tribes & Prophecies

Players each lead a distinct tribe with a unique ability that shapes their actions and strategy over the course of the game. Three prophecy cards are revealed at the start and trigger effects at specific times; these grant scoring opportunities but can also incur penalties if players fail to prepare. New buildings and components expand options for development and support up to five players, while core worker placement and gear-driven timing remain central to planning resource use and scoring.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do the prophecies actually take effect?

The first prophecy begins the day after the first Food Day, the second begins the day after the second Food Day, and the third begins the day after the third Food Day. No prophecy applies during the first quarter of the game; each remains in effect through the end of the next Food Day (pp. 2–3).

If a calamity makes me pay for a reward, do I have to take that reward?

No. You may decline the affected benefit instead of paying its calamity cost, while still taking any other benefits from the same action. You may also pay with resources received from that action (p. 3).

Can I renovate more than one building to get a bigger discount?

No. You may discard only one building when constructing a building or monument through renovation. The discarded building no longer counts among your buildings and provides no further benefits (p. 3).

Do I perform a quick action immediately, and can my technologies improve it?

Yes: perform the available quick action immediately after placing workers, and the worker returns automatically at the end of the round. Technologies never apply to quick actions, although prophecies and tribe abilities can affect them (p. 4; p. 5).

Can I place workers on more than one Quick Action Space in the same turn?

No. You may place at most one worker on a Quick Action Space per turn, although you may also place another worker on the Starting Player Space. You cannot choose a quick action that you are unable to perform when it resolves (p. 4).

How do farms work when Hunger or the Yaluk tribe makes workers require more corn?

A farm that feeds one worker 2 corn can benefit each worker at most once, while a farm that feeds all workers 1 corn is cumulative. Apply these effects first, then pay any remaining corn required by each worker; during Hunger, workers require 3 corn, and Yaluk workers require 1 additional corn (p. 5).
