World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

Players travel to the frozen continent of Northrend to confront the spreading Scourge and ultimately assault Icecrown Citadel. This cooperative, Pandemic-system game casts each player as a legendary hero with unique abilities. Players move across a map of forts, temples, battlegrounds and other locations, set up strongholds, complete quests, and fight waves of undead by rolling dice and playing hero cards to add attacks, block damage, heal, or gain movement. Quests provide team objectives that require dice and card combinations but introduce hazards as they progress. The Scourge advances across the board, and players must coordinate to stop outbreaks and reach the Lich King for the final battle.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I play more than one Hero card on my turn?

Yes. You can play any number of Fight cards during a fight action (after rolling) and any number of Defend cards when suffering damage; Travel and Heal cards are free actions and may be played any number of times on your turn, while Stronghold cards are resolved immediately when drawn (pages 7, 11).

When I fight, do enemies deal damage back for each hit I roll or only once?

Enemies deal damage after you resolve your hits: each ghoul and abomination on your space deals 1 damage (so damage is per enemy present, not per hit rolled); shield results reduce that damage and the Lich King adds +1 damage for fights in his region (pages 5, 7).

If I contribute cards to a quest, do I discard them or lose them?

No — cards contributed to a quest are not discarded and remain in your hand, and each hero on the quest space can contribute one card per quest action (pages 6, 10).

What happens when 'The Scourge Rises' is drawn or a space would get a fourth ghoul (an overrun)?

Resolving 'The Scourge Rises' advances the Scourge marker, moves the Lich King to the region, adds ghouls up to three on that space, and places an abomination; during the regular Spawn Ghouls step, attempting to place a fourth ghoul causes an overrun instead (advance despair once and place an abomination) (pages 8, 10).

How do abominations activate — how do they move and deal damage?

One at a time, each abomination moves one space toward the closest hero (current player chooses ties) and then deals 1 damage to one hero on its space; if multiple abominations deal damage to the same hero they deal it simultaneously (page 8).

How do we win or immediately lose the game?

You win by completing all three quests and then completing the Icecrown Citadel quest (you win immediately when Icecrown Citadel is completed); you lose immediately if the despair marker reaches the bottom of the despair track (and despair also advances when required components/cards cannot be placed or drawn) (page 9).
