Pax Porfiriana

Play as a wealthy hacendado in the violent, pre-revolutionary borderlands of Mexico and the U.S., building an economic and political network of ranches, mines, railroads, banks, troops, and partners. Each turn players take three actions from a tableau-driven market: play cards into their row, buy land, redeploy troops, speculate on market cards, or acquire new cards. Income and special effects resolve from enterprises, extortion, and connection cubes, while Headlines and market position shift over the game. Government form and troop deployment alter production and trigger Toppling cards; victory comes by overthrowing the regime via coup, succession, revolution, or annexation, or by holding the most gold if the regime endures.

Four plays on and it's getting pretty interesting, less chess more boxe —- After one play it seems comparable to pax renaissance in many ways. Main differences seem to be: - mechanics are less interlocked between themselves, so actions play a bit more disjointed.. - there's more immediate "take that" actions that are done mostly to damage your opponent rather than benefit yourself. - there's no map or area control (corollary to the previous point), so the interaction is entirely tableau vs tableau - there's no "tableau action", so again is play one shots and "take that" - some stuff like speculation is pretty interesting - given the nature of the interaction, building victory points is a bit different Overall a it's a good, fun, game, simpler than pax renaissance and a bit more disjointed in mechanics
