Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie

Miniature skirmishes pit warriors from different eras and settings against one another on modular, stackable hex terrain. Players build varied 3D battlefields from a large set of plastic tiles and ruins, place squads and heroes represented by painted plastic figures, and resolve movement and combat using unit cards that list movement, attack, defense and special powers. The game offers a basic ruleset with simplified play and a master ruleset that adds special abilities, wounds, engagement and falling rules, plus point-based army drafting for scenarios. Scenarios define victory conditions such as elimination, reach-or-protect objectives, and turn-based holds.

    The best miniatures skirmish game I've ever played. This Master Set combines heroes and creatures from very different backgrounds, which is one of its attractives for me but may feel weird for new players. PROS - Amazing terrain: absolutely no other game looks this good when displayed on the table. - Good-looking pre-painted figures. - Easy to teach and learn. - Simple atributes and powers system for the characters, with no complicated rules nor exceptions. - Simple movement and combat system: no need for rulers nor any other components. - High level of strategy with the possibility of bluffing and deceiving. - The possibility of creating an unlimited number of scenarios and variants. CONS - The almost inexistent distribution in Spain. - The fact that it has been discontinued for a lot of years, so finding material isn't easy nor cheap.

    The figures are beautiful and the terrain is like minecraft made physical. I love building the maps and then designing the armies. Games go quickly, and the limitation of only allowing three groups to activate per round is really nice. It puts this powerful power limiter that makes something this scale manageable. I also love the sanity rules of 'if the mini can see the other mini it has line of sight' and the 'if the guy can't fit in that space, he can't go through that underpass'. It does use dice for combat, so the best laid plans can be foiled by a bad roll, but that comes with the territory sometimes. There are tons of figures and expansions available for this game. For the most part it's balanced, using the points system to purchase army cards before the start of the game. That being said, it's not 100%. Make agreements with players before selecting armies about what sort of armies are going to fight. Don't pair an army of elves vs the Incredible Hulk. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ☆ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★★★ Raw enjoyment
