Sheriff of Nottingham

Sheriff of Nottingham

Players take the roles of medieval merchants trying to bring goods into a walled city during the prince’s visit. Each round one player serves as the sheriff and inspects or accepts other players’ burlap sacks based on declared contents. On a turn, merchants secretly select items to load, then declare a single type and quantity to the sheriff; the sheriff may accept declarations, demand payment to let sacks pass, or inspect and confiscate undeclared contraband. Bluffing, negotiation, and occasional bribery shape each interaction. After a set number of rounds, players reveal contraband, tally legal goods and contraband values, and the highest-scoring merchant wins.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Do I have to declare the exact number of cards in my bag, and only one kind of good?

Yes — you must announce exactly how many cards are in your Merchant Bag and you may only declare one kind of Legal Good (even if your bag contains mixed or contraband cards). (page 8)

Can I declare Contraband or a mix of goods to the Sheriff?

No — you may only declare Legal Goods (never Contraband), and you may only declare one kind of Good, even if your bag actually contains a mix. (page 8)

If the Sheriff inspects my bag and I was telling the truth, does he pay me? How much?

If your bag contains exactly what you declared, the Sheriff must pay you Gold equal to the Penalty value printed on each Legal Good in your bag. Your Legal Goods are then added to your Merchant Stand. (page 10)

If the Sheriff inspects my bag and I lied, what happens to the goods and who pays penalties?

Any goods you declared truthfully are allowed into the market, but all goods you failed to declare (legal or contraband) are confiscated to the discard pile and you must pay the Sheriff the Penalty for each confiscated card. (page 10)

What can I offer as a bribe, and can I offer cards from my hand?

Bribes can include Gold, Goods from your Merchant Stand or bag, Contraband, or promises of future favors, and all players may negotiate, but you may not offer any cards from your hand as part of a bribe. (page 9)

Are deals and promised bribes binding if the promised goods aren’t actually in my bag or stand?

A deal is binding once an offer is accepted, but promises of future favors (outside the current round) are not binding; if you promised goods as part of a bribe that don’t exist in your bag or stand, you don’t have to pay those goods but must prove they’re not there by showing your cards. (page 11)
